Lewis diagrams that show valence electrons in the atom of an element. All of the elements within the same group have the same number of dots. Pearson chemistry Chapters 7.1, 7.2, 9.1, 9.2 Learn with flashcards, games, and more — for free.
Ions have different numbers of electrons than protons, whereas neutral atoms have the same number of electrons as protons. Atoms have no charge, and ions have a charge. Atoms can have incomplete outer energy levels, whereas ions have completely filled outer energy levels.
Ionic compounds contain both cations and anions in a ratio that results in no net electrical charge. In covalent compounds, electrons are shared between bonded atoms and are simultaneously attracted to more than one nucleus. In contrast, ionic compounds contain cations and anions rather than discrete neutral molecules.
An ion is defined as an atom or molecule that has gained or lost one or more of its valence electrons, giving it a net positive or negative electrical charge. In other words, there is an imbalance in the number of protons (positively charged particles) and electrons (negatively charged particles) in a chemical species.
The ions that we have discussed so far are called monatomic ions, that is, they are ions formed from only one atom. We also find many polyatomic ions. These ions, which act as discrete units, are electrically charged molecules (a group of bonded atoms with an overall charge).
