Background: The self-care deficit nursing theory (SCDNT) advocated by Dorothea E. Orem is widely known and used in nursing practice worldwide. However, its broader philosophical and sociological context is often ignored.
This chapter will present Orem's self-care model through a discussion of the three component theories: self-care, self-care deficit, and nursing systems, and then present an application of that theory by examining how the nurse identifies clinical problems, plans interventions, and evaluates outcomes from the self-care model.
