20 cze 2011 · A "condensed formula" is a way of depicting molecules completely in text form. Here we go through a large number of condensed formulae and try to help you decipher what the brackets mean.
Write condensed structural formulas for alkanes given complete structural formulas. Draw line-angle formulas given structural formulas. We use several kinds of formulas to describe organic compounds. A molecular formula shows only the kinds and numbers of atoms in a molecule.
The homologous series allows us to write a general formula for alkanes: C n H 2 n + 2. Using this formula, we can write a molecular formula for any alkane with a given number of carbon atoms. For example, an alkane with eight carbon atoms has the molecular formula C 8 H (2 × 8) + 2 = C 8 H 18.
Write condensed structural formulas for alkanes given complete structural formulas. Draw line-angle formulas given structural formulas. We use several kinds of formulas to describe organic compounds.
Condensed Structural Formulas. We will frequently represent alkanes using condensed structural formulas such as CH4 (methane), CH3CH3 (ethane) and CH3CH2CH3 (propane).
A condensed structure shows all atoms, but it omits the vertical bonds and most or all of the horizontal single bonds. For example, both ethanol and dimethyl ether have the molecular formula C2H6O. But the condensed structure of ethanol is CH3CH2OH, while for dimethyl ether the condensed structure is CH3OCH3.
