11 wrz 2024 · For the next couple of days, Comet C/2023 A3 may appear to have three tails: a blue gas tail, and a yellow-white dust tail that appears both ahead of the comet as an anti-tail, and behind the comet as its normal dust tail.
An antitail is an apparent spike projecting from a comet 's coma which seems to go towards the Sun, and thus geometrically opposite to the other tails: the ion tail and the dust tail. Despite a common misunderstanding, this phenomenon is not an optical illusion.
15 paź 2024 · According to EarthSky website, an anti-tail is sometimes called an illusion. But it’s real and appears when, as on October 13-15, Earth is crossing the comet’s orbital plane. The website also said, the anti-tail reveals the comet’s past path, or where it has already traveled through space.
Bright comets like Tsuchinshan-ATLAS (C/2023 A3) — captured here with an 6-minute exposure on an 8-inch RASA — sometimes develop an anti-tail. This secondary tail appears to protrude forward...
27 wrz 2024 · On October 14 th at 25° solar elongation, the Earth will cross the orbital plane of the comet, resulting in a strong and sharp anti-tail. According to the simulations, the anti-tail of C/2023 A3 Tsuchinshan-ATLAS should be intrinsically brighter than the famous anti-tail of comet Arend-Roland.
14 paź 2024 · Long-exposure (10- to 45-second) images are also showing a faint, downward or sun-directed tail, which is called the anti-tail. The anti-tail is often said to be an optical illusion,...
2 mar 2020 · On 2008 December 19, we detected the anti-tail of Comet Lulin at a very low elevation. Two days later, we were finally able to obtain good-quality anti-tail imaging. Figure 3 shows the anti-tail lying in the sunward direction.
