The NASW Code of Ethics defines the values, principles, and ethical standards that guide decision-making and everyday professional conduct of social workers.

The Code is relevant to all social workers and social work students, regardless of their professional functions, the settings in which they work, or the populations they serve. The NASW Code of Ethics serves six purposes: The Code identifies core values on which social work’s mission is based.
Clinical social workers make clear their role when speaking or acting as a private individual rather than as a professional or as a representative of a professional organization. When more than one clinician is involved in the care of a client, clinical social workers seek to coordinate treatment.
While registration allows social workers to practise, the BASW Code of Ethics summarises the values and aspirations which BASW believes should characterise social work in the UK. The Code is binding on all social workers who are BASW members in all roles, sectors and settings in the UK.
Social work activity ranges from psychosocial approaches such as clinical social work, group work, social pedagogical work, therapeutic work with families, to involvement in social policy, education, research, commissioning, service development and service improvement.
