The regular trails (La MIna, Big Tree etc are fine with hiking sandals. But, there are some more strenuous trails at El Yunque- Going to EL Yunque Peak, El Toro peak and doing Tradewinds require good shoes, some food, water and some endurance (listed from moderate to more difficult).

La Coca Trail offers a walk in the lower montane forest among the Tabonuco forest. This is a very difficult and challenging trail – stay on the trail – this is where most people get lost in the forest. Very primitive and muddy and bring lots of water with you – the return trip is all uphill.
