The Central Railroad of New Jersey, also known as the Jersey Central, Jersey Central Lines or New Jersey Central (reporting mark CNJ), was a Class I railroad with origins in the 1830s. It was absorbed into Conrail in April 1976 along with several other prominent bankrupt railroads of the Northeastern United States.
SECTION 1: TRAINS AND SERVICES OF THE JERSEY CENTRAL. As the tiny Elizabethtown and Somerville became the Central of New Jersey and extended its lines by construction and acquisition, so did its operations and services develop. Arrangements with other roads made it the tidewater outlet in the New York Harbor for these roads.
The maps include a complete set of the original ICC valuation maps showing all railroad track, structures and property as of 1916. There are also a series of system schematic maps, key maps, and profiles prepared for the valuation, including a map showing the complex conflicting land claims on the Jersey City waterfront.
