The form is used with individuals of all ages and in both clincial and research settings.
The Childhood Autism Rating Scale, Second Edition-Standard Version (CARS2-ST) is used to assess symptoms of autism spectrum disorder across 15 areas of behavior. Raters observe the child's behavior in each area and assign a severity score between 1 and 4, with higher scores indicating more abnormal or atypical behavior consistent with autism.

For CARS, 47 of the 48 subjects diagnosed as autistic received scores above the autism cutoff (total CARS score 29.5) indicating a sensitivity of 98%. For ABC, 42 of the 48 subjects had scores above the autistic cutoff (total ABC score 1⁄4 53), indicating a sensitivity of 88%.
