For the initial treatment of SE, diazepam should be administered as an intravenous bolus at 0.25-1 mg/kg in the dog and 0.5 mg/kg in the cat. This dose can be repeated 3-4 times at 5 to 20 minute intervals while monitoring for cardiopulmonary depression.
