The cardiovascular system comprises the heart, veins, arteries, and capillary beds. The atrioventricular (mitral and tricuspid) and semilunar (aortic and pulmonic) valves keep blood flowing in one direction through the heart, and valves in large veins keep blood flowing back toward the heart.

Thoracic Anatomy (heart, lungs, blood vessels) The normal mammalian heart has 4 chambers (birds also have 4, reptiles have 3). The 2 smaller chambers are called atria, the larger ones are called ventricles. The diagrams at the beginning of this page described the flow of blood through these chambers.
Electrical disturbances within the heart. The heart possesses an entire electrical system to activate the heart muscle to pump blood. If there is a block in the circuit or an abnormal circuit develops, the heart cannot pump effectively. Examples include: atrial fibrillation and ventricular tachycardia.
