Canada’s annual commercial seal hunt is the largest slaughter of marine mammals on the planet. Facing harsh criticism the world over because of the hunt’s cruelty and unsustainability, the Canadian government and fishing industry have spread much misinformation. Here are the basic facts about the hunt.
Seal Hunt Procedures. Best sealing practices are outlined in a 2012 report from the Universities Federation for Animal Welfare. It is titled: “ The Canadian harp seal hunt: observations on the effectiveness of procedures to avoid poor animal welfare outcomes ”.
Seal hunting, or sealing, is the personal or commercial hunting of seals. Seal hunting is currently practiced in nine countries: Canada, Denmark (in self-governing Greenland only), Russia, the United States (above the Arctic Circle in Alaska), Namibia, Estonia, Norway, Finland and Sweden.
The 2022 Canadian commercial seal hunt has officially been declared open beginning April 8th with an expected allowable catch of 400,000 harp seals.
