You don't need 50 something Rexes. You need a two good sets of Riot Gear, a Glider Suit, two really good Pump-Action Shotguns (you're looking at needing 1200-1400 dura for all worn pieces that have a durability), two stacks of med brews, 1-2 cactus broth, and about 800 Simple Shotgun Ammo.

You can only unpod in the cave on Official PvE (have done it in the last month). You can unpod tames just inside the entrance, and again at the top of the last bend in the lava section. I've heard it doesn't work in single player though, even if you have PvE settings enabled.
I have done the tek cave for my very first time and ascended on alpha 2 weeks ago and I'll give you my tips. Do not use large dinos such as rexes or spinos, some if not all will 95% fall into lava, use medium sized dinos. I recommend to use allos or theris if you only have island dinos.
