Campfire permits are available at all four Inyo National Forest Visitor Centers. There is no charge for a campfire permit. The trails listed below include those at Big Pine Creek and the surrounding areas. A wilderness permit is required for overnight stays in the John Muir Wilderness.
2 sty 2024 · The closest camping spots to Big Pine Lakes are Big Pine Creek Campground and Glacier Lodge. Big Pine Creek Campground is cheaper, but has less facilities. Reservations can be extremely difficult and open up 6 months in advance.
Big Pine Creek Campground is at the head of Glacier Lodge Road and adjacent to Glacier Lodge. Although a 1998 fire destroyed the main lodge, cabins are available for rent and a store is open. Anglers try their luck in Big Pine Creek with good success.
The Big Pine Lakes hike can be completed as epic day hike, but is best experienced as a 2-4 day backpacking trip. Set up a lakeside base camp, then swim, fish, peak bag, or hike, taking the time to fully immerse yourself in the dramatic Sierra Nevada scenery.
