But unlike trousers, chaps have no seat, a fact that makes me giggle whenever I hear the oft-used term, “ass-less chaps” because, well, all chaps are, umm, well, you get the idea.

Assless implies there's some version of the clothing that is not absent the ass covering portion. Those are called pants. You can have assless pants.
