I've been using the RTL-SDR for a few months now with the cheap little dipole antenna sold in the kit. Just build the longwire with however cheap you can get wire for and then buy a discone antenna for above 30Mhz. Hard to make a broadband V/U antenna at home if you don't have much tools. I bought a $15 dual band ham antenna meant for hand helds, a BNC to SMA adapter and use it with my SDR.
