To calculate the wraps per inch (WPI), simply wrap the yarn around a pencil or knitting needles. Don’t wrap too tightly, just provide the normal slack you would if you were knitting. Wrap the yarn for approximately 3-4” along the pencil/needle. Use a ruler and count the number of wrap per inch.
19 mar 2024 · Yarn on cones is often referred to by the yarn count (3/8, 10/2 etc). By using a traditional Fixed Weight system, knitters and weavers can refer to yarns in a stadardized way. Using this system, the thicker the yarn, the lower the count. For wool, the count is the second number.

Use the chart provided to compare your WPI number to the weight category to determine the weight of your yarn, and what hook or needle to use to reach a standard size gauge. Keep in mind that WPI is subjective, and results will vary depending on how tightly the yarn is wrapped.
