The continent is bounded on the west by the Atlantic Ocean, on the north by the Mediterranean Sea, on the east by the Red Sea and the Indian Ocean, and on the south by the mingling waters of the Atlantic and Indian oceans.
The continent of Africa borders the southern half of the Mediterranean Sea. The Atlantic Ocean is to the west and the Indian Ocean is to the Southeast. Africa stretches well south of the equator to cover more than 12 million square miles making Africa the world's second largest continent.

South Africa has a long coastline on the Atlantic and Indian oceans. To the north, South Africa borders Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, and Eswatini (formerly Swaziland). South Africa surrounds the tiny kingdom of Lesotho. Most of South Africa is a plateau, or raised flat area.
