  2. Africa is the worlds second largest continent (after Asia). It makes up about one-fifth of the total land surface of Earth. There are more than 50 independent countries in Africa and on the islands off its coasts. Most of Africa was controlled by European countries from the 19th century until after World War II.

  3. Written literature exists in only about 50 of the approximately 700 to 1,000 African languages. Most of this literature has been produced in South Africa and other former English colonies; writing in African languages was discouraged in the French and Portuguese colonies.

  4. Geography. The continent of Africa borders the southern half of the Mediterranean Sea. The Atlantic Ocean is to the west and the Indian Ocean is to the Southeast. Africa stretches well south of the equator to cover more than 12 million square miles making Africa the world's second largest continent.
