The high failure rate is caused by sludge build-up that can result in oil burning, rough idle and engine fault codes. Although the solution is pretty simple, replacing the valve is labor intensive and can take anywhere from six to nine hours.
9 sty 2012 · 2003 E46 318 n42 motor oil separator/pcv valve DIY. Can't seem to find a DIY on replacing the oil separator & associated hoses. Can someone point me in the right direction. Seems like it is another common failure point with these cars as I have found lots of posts saying as much.
