Eta Persei (η Persei, abbreviated Eta Per, η Per), is a binary star and the 'A' component of a triple star system (the 'B' component is the star HD 237009) [8] in the constellation of Perseus. Parallax measurements by the Gaia spacecraft imply that it is 1,000 is light-years away from Earth. [1]

This is a brief historical review of the discovery of binary stars, starting in the 18th and 19th century with the work of W. Herschel, W. Struve, and their famous sons. I describe how Ch. Doppler in 1842 found the Doppler effect in connection with the colours of double stars.
The system is a wide eclipsing binary star, with the two stars orbiting each other every 14.6 years. The primary component passes in front of the companion and the combined magnitude of the system drops by 0.55.
