I think you need to understand value. I do NOT see any value in watching other people play videogames. If I am interested in a game I'll DL the emulator and run it. Recording yourself PLAYING A GAME while you're sitting in a chair is just the lowest hanging, laziest form of making a youtube channel.

A few days ago I made a post asking you guys to send me your gaming videos, and in the past 3 days I've spent around 20 hours looking through 116 small channels and giving them advice. What I found was that the mistakes made were not unique.
I would think you would have to promote the videos/channel independently to build a small following like on social media or word of mouth. Family and friends should be easy subs if the content is cool enough. Every business requires you to sell yourself in some way before you start moving forward.
I am a full time solo game developer and I run my YouTube channel about game development on the weekends (130,000+ subscribers). It's a lot of work, but it's both possible and worthwhile.
