My personal favorite rogue build is Champion 6/Thief 3/Gloom Stalker 3 build for range, getting both archer and two handed fighting styles, extra attack & extra bonus action, and first turn extra attack -- DPR with dual crossbows is enormous. Plus a bunch of potential variants like Champion 6/Thief 3/Gloom Stalker 1/Warlock 2.

Rogue is one of the weakest classes to go pure 12 levels in. Rogue + Gloomstalker ranger is a good combo, Gloomstalker gives Extra Attack at level 5, which Rogue sorely lacks, and its subclass features are centered around stealth and getting the drop on enemies, very similar to rogue.
The best pure rogue class is also arcane trickster. This allows you to cast spells as scrolls so that you can force disadvantage on your targets if you are hiding! Reply reply
