An essay is not just about showing what you know. A good essay, whether for an exam or during term-time, is one that applies what you have learned to the task of addressing the specific essay question. With this in mind, the general advice is: Answer the question; keep it relevant.
This handout details some of the main differences between the two types of documents, and provides tips on how to create an essay which clearly demonstrates your personal strengths, goals, and commitment to the field and highlights why you are a good fit for the program to which you are applying.
Gordon Harvey’s “Elements of the Academic Essay” provide a possible vocabulary for commenting on student writing. Instructors in Harvard College Writing Program tend to use some version of this vocabulary when talking about and commenting on student writing, so it’s likely that your students will be familiar with some of the terms
Academic assignments contain clearly formulated central idea developed in logical manner, leading to conclusion. The central idea - usually expressed in a single sentence (your answer to the question). In answering the question, you have to follow a clear and sustained line of reasoning.
