Well if you want a controller that works out-of-the-box with all games and without making any tweaks, Xbox controllers are the way to go. Me personally I like the DualShock4. It requires some tweaks to get it working, but I honestly think it's the best modern controller.
I've heard it is even better if you have the Sony dualsense controller, but even with an xbox controller it is one of the best controller games I've played. Incredibly fluid motion and shooting and a beautiful game with an excellent soundtrack as well.
most games are quite well supported with controller i find, but probably not hardcore FPS. ones i played recently with a controller new tombraiders, forza4, dmc5, cyberpunk are all good with controller.
