The epic poem follows Beowulf, a hero who comes to aid Hrothgar, King of the Danes, in his fight against the vicious monster Grendel. Before the tale is over, Beowulf fights and defeats Grendel, Grendel’s mother, becomes king of the Geats, and vanquishes a dragon.
By the end of today's lesson, you will have created a detailed text map of the story of "Beowulf and the Dragon", and you will have used this to already retell the buildup, climax, and resolution of this story.

Beowulf becomes king of Geatland and he reigns for 50 years. A dragon is provoked to attack the Geats and Beowulf wants to fight it; his young cousin Wiglaf objects. Beowulf's sword is useless against the dragon and it bites him; he is able to slay the dragon, but he is wounded.
