The Battle of Hastings [a] was fought on 14 October 1066 between the Norman-French army of William, Duke of Normandy, and an English army under the Anglo-Saxon King Harold Godwinson, beginning the Norman Conquest of England.
This is an updated pdf edition of the second edition of my book on the battle of Hastings published in 2003 and now out of print. It is regarded, at least by some, as the definitive academic treatment of the battle.
The Battle of Hastings: Events. The battle started a 9.oo am. The archers walked up to Senlac Hill and fired a volley of arrows. Some of the Norman infantry charged up the hill but were blocked by the housecarls. The Anglo-Saxons’ main form of defence was the shield wall.

This fateful day resulted in the destruction of Anglo-Saxon rule of England. The courageous leaders mutually prepared for battle, each according to his national custom.
