With the support of the Prussian II and Saxon XII Corps of Prince Friedrich Karl's Second Army, the Guards conquered St. Privat by 20:00 hours after heavy losses, pushing back the French right wing. Bazaine's Army of the Rhine withdrew into Metz fortress on the morning of 19 August.

The attackers lost 8,000 men, and Canrobert’s corps of 23,000 men held against some 100,000 Germans. Bazaine ignored Canrobert’s pleas for reinforcement.

The Battle of Gravelotte (to the Germans) or Saint-Privat (to the French) took place on 18 August 1870, west of Metz. It paved the way for the French army’s capitulation and Napoleon III’s surrender, on 2 September 1870, at Sedan.
On 18 August 1870, Marshal Bazaine’s troops clashed with Prince Friedrich Karl of Prussia’s army at Gravelotte, in a bloody melee. 125 000 French faced 285 000 Germans. The goal of the battle was the Saint-Privat hilltop, defended by Marshal Canrobert’s VI Corps.
