The Baltimore City Fire Department utilizes a variety of standardized and specialized apparatus to carry out its duties. The apparatus assigned to the Baltimore City Fire Department are: Engine Companies - The Engine Companies are the backbone of the fire suppression operation in the Baltimore City Fire Department.
The department is divided into 6 battalions, with a Shift Commander overseeing the battalions for each shift. The BCFD is comprised of 1,800 employees who protect a population of approximately 576,000 residents, over an area of about 92 square miles, 80 of which are land.
Fire Stations. For more than 150 years the Baltimore City Fire Department has provided fire protection and Emergency Medical Services to the citizens and City of Baltimore. In an effort to continue our dedicated service, we have 38 fire stations strategically located throughout the City.
We also provide the City of Baltimore with emergency medical services, fire suppression, basic and technical rescue, emergency communications, disaster preparedness planning and response, hazardous materials mitigation, community fire risk reduction, community recruitment, community outreach, public education, and marine fire rescue programs.
Throughout the year, we had the ability to increase fire apparatus, build upon our citywide & community partnerships, introduce new programs & transform initiatives.
Baltimore had a very interesting fleet of apparatus in 1973. Baltimore had many rigs painted red with white hose bodies going way back. Then the fleet became white with red fenders sometime in the late 30s.
