24 mar 2017 · This chapter reviews the evidence for Dionysus' early accommodation in Italy, and presents a series of snapshots involving Dionysian ritual or role-playing from Roman history.
A brisk survey of the history of Dionysus (or Bacchus, Fufluns, Liber, etc.) in Italy usefully plots a path between the different chapters by framing the Roman reception of Dionysus in terms of moments of “accommodation” and “resistance”.
Roman drama. Their study reveals that Liber was identified as the Roman equivalent of Dionysus by the early second century B.C. and suggests that Roman authorities may have feared that the traditional cult of Liber would replaced by the innovative Bacchic cult.

Nine contributions address Bacchus’ appearance at the crossroads of Greek and Roman cultures, tracing continuities and differences between literary and archaeological sources for the god.
Roman version of the god as well as his Greek form had been accepted in Rome (and fused to some extent); in addition to the old Italic appellation of the god as Liber, out of the god’s Greek names, Bacchus in particular was used.
In response to a dossier of different theonyms and iconographic profiles for a set of gods in central Italy from the 5th-3rd centuries that correspond to Dionysus, this chapter considers the relationship between Fufluns, Liber, Hiaco (and other by-forms) with reference to two main concepts.
