Most reports about feline babesiosis are from South Africa, where infection is mainly caused by the small, pathogenic B felis. B felis can cause severe anaemia and icterus in cats; other Babesia species are less pathogenic and rarely cause clinical signs.
Babesiosis is a vector-borne disease caused by Babesia (B.) spp., a common protozoal blood parasite in mammals worldwide. The small B. felis sensu stricto is the most important pathogenic species in cats. It is found mainly in South Africa. In Europe, infections with Babesia spp. causing mild chronic disease in cats are described only sporadically.
8 lut 2010 · Objective – To review and summarize current information regarding the etiology, clinical presentation, diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis of feline babesiosis, especially with regard to features distinct from canine babesiosis. Etiology – Babesiosis is caused by hemoprotozoa of the genus Babesia.
The drug of choice is the anti-malarial, Primaquine phosphate given at 1 mg/cat every 36 hours for four time, then 1mg/cat every 7 days for four time. Primaquine phosphate is known not to sterile the infection after treatment, which is crucial in the development of premune stage. Doxycycline-5mg/kg b.i.d. for 21 days has some effect.
