According to a longitudinal study assessing autonomic symptoms in PD patients at the Hoehn–Yahr stage 1 with disease duration <2 years and following up those patients for three years, at least one symptom of autonomic dysfunctions was present in 71% of the PD patients in early stages and in all patients after 3-year follow-up .

Previous reports have demonstrated that autonomic dysfunction can present even in the early stages of PD, and some autonomic features sometimes predate the classical motor symptoms. These findings raise the possibility of using them as potential markers for aiding PD diagnosis at an earlier stage.
