18 paź 2024 · A speedometer tells you how fast you’re going, either in miles per hour (mph) or kilometers per hour (kph), depending on the country you live in. Older speedometers were cable driven, but modern speedometers are entirely electronic.
Mechanical speedometers measure the speed of a car by being linked mechanically with the gearbox output shaft. Since this shaft lies 'downstream' of the gear box, the speed with which it rotates is independent of gear changes and so gives a true measure of the road speed.
Repairs of the speedometer and odometer sub-sections can be made by exchange with intact/functional parts from other Smiths or Jaeger speedometers. Many parts will be common across a broad range of models and years. There are four main variations (that I know of) that will influence the possibility of exchange.

Speedometers for other vehicles have specific names and use other means of sensing speed. For a boat, this is a pit log. For an aircraft, this is an airspeed indicator.
