Examining (and, where possible, correcting) mutual misapprehension is part of this task. J. L. Austin’s remarks on poetry offer one such point of entry: they are often cited by poets and critics as an example of philosophy’s blindness to poetry (I).
In this chapter, I’ll survey Austin’s views in three areas: his views of language and philosophy; language and truth; and language and speech acts. The theme linking these views is Austin’s rejection of any simple account of the assessment of utterances as true or false.
Looking at the work of J.L. Austin, who subjected language to a close and intense analysis, this book deals with his examination of the various things we do with words, and with the philosophical insights he believed could be gained by closely examining the uses of words by non-philosophers.
