Standard 170 originated with an agreement between ASHRAE and the Facility Guidelines Institute (publishers of the Guidelines for Design and Construction of Health Care Facilities) that an ASHRAE standard would provide the best location for ventilation requirements for the health care industry.

This American National Standard (ANS) is a national voluntary consensus standard developed under the auspices of the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE).
ANSI/ASHRAE/ASHE Standard 170 offers guidance, regulation and mandates to designers and operators of health care facilities. The revised 2021 edition incorporates 17 addenda to the 2017 standard.
