Cho'Gath is not one of the best tops, but has a lot of potential. Its R let's you build up a lot of health infinitely (actual 255 max stacks). All of its abilities have some kind of CC. Its Q (Rupture) makes the enemies airborne and slows them, W (Feral Scream) silences all enemies in a cone, and its E (Vorpal Strikes) slows them again.
PASSIVE: Damaging basic attacks and ability damage deal 10 − 45 (based on level) bonus true damage to enemy Champion icon champions affected by certain crowd control effects. The target must already be impaired prior to the damaging attack or spell in order to trigger the bonus damage.
My best success with cho is a sort of AP tank hybrid. Your mythic is Everfrost and your core items after that besides boots are Warmogs and Demonic Embrace. Rune wise it's Hail of Blades and whatever else you want really. For the 2nd tree I run condition and overgrowth.
Tank is the OG Cho'gath, good against melee, decent against ranged (only if you get Approach Velocity in secondary rune). Approach Velocity is vital for Cho'gath since he is extremely immobile and you can easily ganks by hitting the toplaner and jungler with Q.

You can start with RoA (safe), Luden's (Very aggro) or GLP (Preference/Glacial). 2nd item, you either go for more offence (I like Protobelt, but you can also go Rabadons) or get a tank item (I prefer FH/Abyssal - or Adaptive if I already have RoA). Ludens/GLP->Protobelt/Rabadons->Tank.
