9 maj 2020 · Dial-up modems were designed to work with the ordinary wired telephone network that linked nearly every home and business in the developed world. Using special software, your computer would tell your modem the telephone number to dial.
Dialup modems literally made a phone call and used sound to communicate data. The earliest, "cradle" modems literally had you put a phone handset on a device with a speaker and a microphone. Later modems plugged into a phone line directly, and didn't need to play anything out loud.

However, it's those items that we can make, because they are comprimised of the same stuff seen in nature, or made out of stuff in nature we've converted. Nothing is made of thin air.
The noise itself was just for debugging purposes. If you had a handset listening in on the line you could hear it as well, but that would also disrupt the connection. Most modems made it possible to disable the onboard speaker during dialing and handshaking if the user didn't want to hear it.
