Visual analogue scales are frequently used to assess and monitor self-report measures in adults and children, in particular fear and pain. The measures can be as simple as a horizontal line marked 0 and 10 or 0 and 100 at each end (Fig. 1).
Visual analogue scales (VAS's) can be used for subjective ratings of mood, emotion, distress, or other sensations such as pain. Clients simply rate the intensity of the sensation on a scale from 0 - 100, or on whatever scale has been agreed.
