Ilex aquifolium is the holly most people think of when they picture holly, with its glossy, spiny, dark leaves, and bright red fruit. American holly (Ilex opaca Ait.) occurs from Massachusetts to Florida and westward through the Gulf States (fig. 1). Its western limits are Texas and Oklahoma. New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, and southeastern Missouri probably define the species’ northern boundary.
