History Teacher of the Year Started in 2004, this Gilder Lehrman program recognizes excellence in the teaching of history at the K–12 level. Each year, thousands of teachers are nominated by students, parents, fellow teachers, and community members, shining a light on the important work they do.
Since the inception of the program in North Carolina in 1970, three State Teachers of the Year have become National winners. Five have become National Finalists and one has been inducted into the National Teachers' Hall of Fame.

The NCCAT 2024 Empower NC Beginning Teacher of the Year Award process was developed to honor beginning teachers and to retain teachers who show promise as excellent teachers and education leaders in North Carolina public schools and public charter schools.
APPLICATION PORTFOLIO INSTRUCTIONS FOR COMPLETING THE NCCAT CTE PORTFOLIO. The nominee must meet the general qualifications as outlined. All information requested for the portfolio must be provided. Signatures of the nominee and the nominee's CTE Director MUST be included.
