A true healthy normal ALT level ranges from 29 to 33 IU/l for males, 19 to 25 IU/l for females and levels above this should be assessed. The degree of elevation of ALT and or AST in the clinical setting helps guide the evaluation.

AST is measured as an index of liver damage but it is less specific for this purpose than alanine aminotransferase (ALT). Values >20x the upper limit of normal may occur with severe liver damage. Smaller increments (usually <5x ULN) may occur in cholestasis, due to secondary damage to hepatocytes.
