The Water Tribe is one of the original four nations and its citizens primarily inhabit the northern and southernmost regions of the globe, near both poles. It is also a collective term for the nation of people who practice the art of waterbending.
The Water Tribes are not Native American, Samoan or Pacific Islander. They are based on the Aleut and Inuit speaking peoples of North America and the Yupik peoples of Alaska and Siberia. The foggy swamp tribe is a reference to the movement of Canadian settlers from Eastern Canada to the Louisiana area forming the Cajun (Acadian) cultural group.
The Water Tribes are mainly based on the Inuits, Polynesia, Native Americans, Australian Aboriginals, Siberia, China and Mongolia. With the Northern Water Tribe also taking inspiration from Venice and the Foggy Swamp Tribe from the Mississipi river delta and Vietnam.
There are three tribes: the Northern Water Tribe, centered in the North Pole; the Southern Water Tribe, centered in the South Pole; and the Foggy Swamp Tribe, located in the Earth Kingdom's Foggy Swamp.
