Al-Muhtadee Billah a été proclamé prince héritier du sultanat de Brunei, le 10 août 1998 au palais Nurul Iman, le palais royal.Lors de la cérémonie, son père, lui a décerné le Keris Si Naga (« dague dragon »), l'amenant à devenir le 30 e sultan de Brunei.
