Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), the virus that causes acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS), is transmitted through sexual contact and exposure to infected blood or blood components and perinatally from mother to neonate.
Treatment with combination antiretroviral therapy (ART) enables people with HIV infection to live a long, healthy and productive life. It also reduces their viral load significantly and this has been shown to be important in preventing onward transmission of HIV.
A second viral load may be considered before regimen switch if DTG-based regimens are unavailable and the results of a viral load test can be returned and acted on rapidly. Conduct same-day testing using point-of-care viral load testing for a repeat viral load test, where available, to expedite the return of results.
