I've had horrendous luck in getting an air mattress that either doesn't leak on the first use (I'm looking at you, Target, and your crappy blue air mattresses) or after a few uses. I've used about 10 of them over the years and they all spring small leaks after a few hours or the night.
Serta has a branded air mattress with two built-in pumps - one to inflate/deflate, and the other to top up the air based on settings from soft to firm. Available at Target, around 100-120 dollars. If you're going to do this, thats what I would recommend.
I slept on an air mattress for a year for this exact reason. I was totally fine with it. It got cold any time I'd take it camping, but at home in a relatively warm room, I was never uncomfortable. I was about 27 at the time, so no real health concerns about being on it long term.
