I logged onto iCloud to download photos from my account, not to change my password. I personally don't think it would even be possible for me to complete a password change within the one minute it took to do so according to the timestamps on the emails.
If you have a secondary email on your account(not an @icloud.com address) you can try iforgot.apple.com to reset your security questions or your password via email. If this doesn't work, or it says not enough information, then you're SOL.

Basically there was an email from Apple saying a trusted number was added to the account, 1 min later, her phone number was removed and then the password was also changed. Since her iPhone backs up everything, photos/videos/passwords essentially her whole life, decades of information.
