Being a part of any of a specific lodge (particularly AF and AM or F and AM) is not mandatory. Thus, a mason can join either of them in the United States.

A.F. & A.M. means “Ancient Free & Accepted Masons”. The term Ancient originated in England during the Middle Ages. After the foundation of the first Grand Lodge in England in 1717, a rival Grand Lodge arose less than two decades later, calling itself the Antients (or Ancients).
