I came across some old film that I have written on the box "Ilford". The sheets have 3 half-circle notches right in a row with equal spacing. Can anyone identify the film for me? I looked it up in some of my reference books but don't see that notch pattern. Perhaps the original HP-5 (not+).
A notch code is a set of notches or recesses cut into the edge of a piece of sheet film to provide a tactile way to identify the film brand, type, and processing chemistry (e.g. black and white, color negative, or color reversal) in the dark.
Determine the emulsion side of the film: 4x5 sheet film is notched on the 4 inch side near a corner to clue us in on which side is the emulsion side: hold the sheet upright (4 inch edge up) in front of your face (you, of course, can’t see a thing), and orient the sheet so you can feel notches on its upper edge near the right corner.
23 kwi 2018 · Each film holder takes two sheets of film. The film has little notches on one corner, all large format film does, and each film has it’s own unique notch code. This means it’s quick and easy to tell which way the film goes into the film holders. I find the notch of the film with my fingers.
9 lut 2015 · You will notice that the film is notched at one corner, when the film is held with long side pointing vertically, the emulsion will be facing up when the notches are in the top right hand corner. The photo below shows a sheet of film going into the holder the correct way.

25 lip 2014 · I'm not sure when sheet film started having notch shapes that coded for the emulsion. If you take a sheet out in the darkroom and feel the edges, there will be notches near one corner; trace the shape of those notches and it may help you determine what kind of film.
