Diagnose metatarsophalangeal joint pain by the absence of burning, numbness, tingling, and interspace pain (suggesting interdigital nerve pain) and by palpation. Correct foot biomechanics with orthoses. Treat underlying systemic rheumatic disease (eg, rheumatoid arthritis), if present.
