The Gangster Disciple Nation (often abbreviated as the GD's; formally, GDN), also known as Growth & Development, is an African American street and prison gang founded by former rivals David Barksdale and Larry Hoover; in 1968, the two came together to form the Black Gangster Disciple Nation (BGDN).

They are intended to guide the behavior and beliefs of the Gangster Disciples, who were also known as the Black Gangster Disciples and the Black Gangster Disciple Nation.
They were called variously "Black Gangster Disciples (BGD's)", "Black Gangster Disciple Nation (BGDN)", but always were GD's. What is significant? The gang was basically formed while Larry Hoover was in prison, serving a life sentence for a murder conviction.

In 1969, Hoover and David Barksdale called a truce and decided to combine both of their respective rival gangs (Supreme Gangsters and Black Disciples) together to become the Black Gangster Disciple Nation (BGDN).
A war between the Gangster Disciples and Black Disciples continues although both gangs are influential in their southside neighborhoods. The Gangster Disciples continue to be a major force within Illinois, Wisconsin, Indiana and other states prison systems.
