Aktor był czterokrotnie żonaty - w latach 1948-1958 z Eleanor Pittman (mieli troje dzieci), od 1959 do 1961 z Rachel Taylor, w latach 1961-1969 z Lauren Bacall (mają syna Sama), a w 1970 poślubił Lois O'Connor (mieli dwoje dzieci), z którą był do swojej śmierci.
